Silencers, unless specifically authorized by law, are prohibited from being used, possessed, or sold by any person in Massachusetts.
A silencer is an instrument that attaches to a weapon which causes the firing of the weapon to be silenced or is intended to lessen or muffle the noise of the firing of the weapon.
A weapon for the purposes of this offense is any firearm, gun, revolver or pistol. This prohibition under Massachsuetts criminal law applies to those items specifically manufactured as silencers, or to modifications made to a firearm for purpose of silencing the weapon.
Potential Punishment if Convicted of Unlawfully Selling, Giving, or Using a Silencer in Massachusetts
If convicted of this offense, a defendant may be imprisoned for not more than 5 years in state prison or for not more than 2 ½ years in jail of a house of correction. The punishment for this offense may be found under Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 269, Section 10A.
