Case Overview:
A man with a dozen cases on his criminal record was charged over the course of a 6-month period with four separate domestic violence cases in three separate courts in both Rhode Island (RI) and Massachusetts (MA). All charges stemmed from allegations of abuse by his ex-girlfriend. In May 2024, the man was alleged to have punched and pushed the woman while she was seated in a car. In June 2024, he allegedly entered her apartment, slammed her against a dresser, and punched her in the face causing her eye to swell shut, violating an abuse prevention order issued by a court in Massachusetts In September 2024, it was alleged he physically assaulted her again, violating a no contact order that was issued by a Rhode Island court. After this incident, the man retained Criminal Defense Attorney John L. Calcagni III to defend him in this matter.
Case Result: 14 Months of Probation with Conditions
The man chose Attorney Calcagni’s first because it handles criminal cases in multiple jurisdictions, including Massachusetts and Rhode Island. First, Attorney Calcagni surrendered the man on an active arrest warrant that was issued by Quincy District Court. There he defended against the Commonwealth’s motion to revoke bail and secured the man’s pretrial release. After removal of this warrant, Attorney Calcagni reviewed and analyzed all the evidence, participated in pretrial negotiations with three separate prosecutors’ offices, and persuaded each office to recommend a sentence of 1 year of probation.
